Cyclones

We have been learning how to write explanations. This is our explanation of how Cyclones occur.

A cyclone is a severe storm that forms over the ocean in tropical areas.
Cyclones begin as areas of low pressure around which the winds rotate. The winds blow anticlockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
The area at the centre of the storm which, surprisingly, is quite calm is called the eye of the storm. The winds rotate around the ‘eye’.

Cyclones involve winds of at least 125 kilometres per hour. The gale force winds can be up to 200 kilometres from the centre of a cyclone. When they come onto land, the heavy rain, strong winds and large waves can cause a great deal of damage.

If a cyclone originates in the Atlantic Ocean it is called a hurricane. Cyclones that develop in the Pacific are called typhoons. Hurricanes are most common in the Caribbean and around the Gulf of Mexico while the Philippine Islands and coastal areas of Japan and China experience many typhoons.

Cyclones are given names by meteorologists to help identify and track them as they move across the ocean onto land.

On August 28th 2005 Hurricane Katrina hit the Southern coast of the United States with devastating effect. It was reported that more than 1,800 people lost their lives and more than 81 billion dollars in damages occurred..

Lá Fhéile Pádraig

Comhgairdeas le gach duine a thóg páirt sa mhórshiúil. Bhí banna ceoil na scoile go h-íontach!
Yesterday, the 17th of March was St. Patrick's Day. It was a scorching day. The sun was beating down at a high temperature. The band, majorettes and flag-holders met in town at 11.45am. Everyone was dressed in the yellow and maroon parade uniform. The parade commenced at 12.30pm. There were massive crowds in town. There was a great atmosphere among the crowds. We were applauded while we walked the streets. We played tunes which we learned in class. Everyone enjoyed the parade. It was a lovely day.

Making Lenten Crosses

  • First you get 6 lollipop sticks.

  • Then you get white rectangular piece of card.

  • You do the same with the other 3 lollipop stickes onto your other piece of card.

  • Then when you have that done you get 6 pegs that are broken in half and stick them onto the lollipop sticks.

  • You put 3 pegs one way and 3 pegs the opposite way.
  • Then get 3 more pegs and with the other 6 make the long part of the cross.

  • Then get 6 more and make the part going across.

  • Then you will have your cross.

  • Then get 2 half pegs and stick them together to make Jesus' body.

  • Then get 2 more pegs and stick them onto the body for Jesus' arms.
  • Then get 2 more for the legs .

Tricky Tangrams

We had some great fun with tangrams in maths class. It's very hard to make a square but some people managed it! We also used the tangrams to make some other shapes.

Calendar Winners

We are very proud that our class scooped two prizes in the Galway City Council Environment Calendar 2009. Roisín is the overall winner and her picture appears on the cover. Nicole received a special merit award. Congratulations to them both.
