Pinhole Camera

To make a pinhole camera you need: sellotape, a cardboard cylinder (empty toilet roll), some rubber bands, greaseproof paper, black paper, tinfoil and pins.

First we brought in an empty toilet roll.
On one end of the toilet roll we put on some tinfoil.
On the other end we put on greaseproof paper.
We put an elastic band on the tinfoil and greaseproof to make sure they didn’t fall off.
Then we put a little hole through the tinfoil.
We made a tube with black paper and stuck it halfway down the toilet roll.
We sellotaped the black paper so it didn’t fall.

When we used our cameras to look through the window at the houses opposite the school the houses appeared upside down.

Green Rhymes

Tin and Glim jump in the bin
to see what they could find
they found the green flag
recyeled the bag
and played a game of tag.

Sharon Boyle

Diddle diddle dumpling my son Lin,
Put his rubbish in a bin,
Paper in the green, food in the brown,
He turned Mother Natures frown
upside-down

Gary Donoghue

The rubbish stack is falling down, falling down,
falling down

The rubbish stack is falling down

with all its recycled items.

The rubbish stack is built again, built again,

built again

The rubbish stack is built again

with all its recycled items.

Shane Conneely

Mary Mary quite Contrary
How does your green school grow
With coiste glas flags
And newspapaer bags
And recycling bins all in a row.
Roll Roll Roll your rubbish
Even if you don't care.
Merrrily Merrily Merrily Merrily
The recycling bins are over there.

Halima Jailan

Mr. Kilbane, Mr. Kilbane,
I'm quite a fan,
How does your green school go?!
"With lots of bins we have no sins
and no litter on show!!"

Nicole Sylver

Humpty Dumpty found a tin
but he didn't put it in the bin.
All the King's horses and all the king's men
told the Green School about Humpty Again.
Little Jack Horner sat in the corner
sorting out his rubbish
Some in the green, some in the brown and some in the grey.
Then he said"What a good boy am I".

Ryan Daly

Jack and Jill went up a hill

to fetch a pail of rubbish

Jack fell in and broke the bin
and all the rubbish came after him.
There was a farmer who had
a bin and litter was his name-o
l-i-t-t-e-r l-i-t-t-e-r l-i-t-t-e-r
and litter was his nam-o.

Aoife Mc Peake

And RECYCLE was his name-o

November poem by Halima Jailan

NOVEMBER POEM

Frosty cold mornigs

Winter is coming by.

Short days approaching

Dark days, dark nights,dark sky.

Playing in the snow

Or dancing in the rain

Sitting by the fire with each happy member

This the month this is November.

St. Francis

St Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of our school. His feast day is the fourth of October. We are having a Mass today to celebrate his feast day. St Francis was born in 1182. His father was a wealthy man. St Francis was born in the town of Assisi in north central Italy. As a young man he gave up his wealth and devoted his life to the poor. He loved nature. He is the patron saint of the environment.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Following the success of our gift bag art project,
we have found another way to re-use some of our household
"rubbish"and turn it into something useful.
We used old newspaper to make waste-paper bins!
Our new bins can be used for clean, dry recyclables.

From empty carton to lovely gift bag.

  • First get an empty juice or milk carton.

  • Then you cut the top of it off.

  • You wash and dry it.

  • Next you get wrapping paper and cover the carton.

  • Some people designed their own wrapping paper.

  • You then punch two holes on each side.

  • You use strings, shoe laces or scraps of ribbon to make handles.

  • That's it! You have a gift bag

Spider hunt

Yesterday the 16/9/08 my class went outside to do a spider hunt. First we got a scooper and a pooter and went outside. A pooter is a plastic container with two straws for collecting minibeasts. We went looking behind the prefabs, on the grass, under trees, on the tree and in webs. When we had found some spiders we went to the other side of the school to look for more. We went around to the shed and got more spiders there and then we went inside. Back in the classroom we looked at the spiders and tried to identify them. Shane and Ronan found a spider in the bathroom! After that we went outside again and put the spiders back where we found them.

Tie-dying

On Friday the 8th of September our class took on the task of tie-dying our t-shirts. Here is a description of how we did it:

  • Firstly, we each brought in a plain white t-shirt.
  • Ms. Farrelly got different colour dyes from our local chemist. The colours included: Bahama Blue, Flamingo Pink, Sunflower Yellow, Dark Green and Denim Blue.

  • We put pebbles from the school playground into the t-shirt and secured them with elastic bands. This would make the design.

  • We placed six litres of warm water into a basin, and added six tablespoons of salt.

  • Ms. Farrelly emptied the dye into the basin, and each of us put our t-shirts into it.
  • We took turns stirring the t-shirts with a wooden ruler. After some time, we lifted our t-shirts out from the basin and put them in strong plastic bags.
  • We had to remove the pebbles and elastic bands before putting them in the washing machine at home.
  • The t-shirts came out lovely and we even modelled them on our PE day!!
